Creating History, One Dance Step at a Time

The Grand Theatre is proud to present Tottering Biped Theatre’s production of First Dancein the McManus Studio Theatre, February 18 to 22, 2014.

First Dance, created by Trevor Copp, Jeff Fox and Lisa O’Connell, is a unique show that tells the story of a gay couple (played by Copp and Fox) who put a creative spin on the traditional first dance at their wedding. Rituals of masculinity – shaving, childhood games, tying a tie, life at camp, marriage – are recalled and remixed into scenes and dance. One character shaves the other’s face while waltzing, a Tango is performed to the tying of a necktie, WWF wrestlers emerge from childhood, and life at camp is all brought into the focus through the advent of marriage. Instead of conforming to the traditional gender roles in ballroom dancing, the couple decides to break these barriers and share the responsibility of leader and follower — a technique they call “liquid lead.”

Copp, Fox and O’Connell have successfully created this innovative and contemporary piece that has captivated audiences both inside and outside the gay community.

First Dance is part of The Grand Theatre’s UnderGrand Series. Tickets are available online at www.grandtheatre.com and at the box office at 519-672-8800
