The FLUX London Dance Festival & Flash Mob

For the women behind London’s FLUX Dance Festival, nothing is more important than sharing their love of dance with the broader community. So for their second annual event, festival co-directors Elizabeth (Bizz) Varty, Lacey Smith and Ruth Douthwright decided to invite members of the public to share the stage with the pros in a Flash Mob performance.    “We had a great response to our first FLUX festival last summer. The buzz generated has carried through and people are very excited about this second edition,” says Varty. “Our goal is to bring dance out into the community, and this year we are thrilled to offer dancers and non-dancers the opportunity to participate in our festival Flash Mob, in addition to our other dance performances and workshops.”    The FLUX Flash Mob & Dance Party – an interactive, family event – will kick off the festival’s Community Dance Celebration, July 3 at Ivey Park (Rain location: Goodwill Industries.)   People interested in participating in the Flash Mob are encouraged to visit the festival website and watch or download the video to learn the moves at home. “People can learn the whole dance or just one section,” says Varty. “We hope everyone will wear bright colours and just come out to have some fun.”   The Flash Mob will be followed by a showcase of short works by local dance groups: Alina Sotskova, Breath in Mvmt, Dasein Dance School’s Young Company, Flamenco Dance London, North London Dance Centre Young Company, Sound in Motion.   The 2015 FLUX London Dance Festival begins July 2 at 6 pm in the gardens of Eldon House with Dance At Home, featuring performances by local artists Dasein Dance Theatre, Dorit Osher and Hélène Lussier, Vidya Natarajan and Nicole Carr with Katy Carswell.    The final performances will be In The Park, July 4 at  3 pm in Ivey Park featuring BoucharDanse and Throwdown Collective, both from Toronto,  and Nikki Shawana with Delbert and Waskwaabiish Jonathan from Waterford / Anishinabe Nation.   All performances are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation.    In addition to her July 4 performance, Shawana will lead a workshop (July 5, 12:30 pm @ Goodwill Industries) where participants can hear the story of First Nations Hoop Dance, and learn the basics using three hoops. The workshop is suitable for all ages, and no previous dance experience is necessary, but pre-registration is encouraged.    A second festival workshop, (July 4, 10:30 am @ Dasein Dance Theatre) will be led by Marie-Josée Chartier of BoucharDanse, and will explore vocal expression and movement.  “Introducing new audiences to dance is a real thrill,” says Varty. “And on a personal level, I enjoy being able to see so many incredible dance performances without having to leave town.”    Festival DetailsWhat: FLUX London Dance Festival When: July 2-5, 2015 Where: Eldon House, Ivey Park and Goodwill Industries Tickets: All performance events are Pay-What-You-Can, with suggested donation.
