United Kutz downtown celebrates eight years in business!

Cutting hair has always felt more like fun than work for Kwami Lambert. The owner and barber at United Kutz downtown has been cutting hair for most of his life, and this week celebrates eight years cutting hair professionally.

Lambert and his team of barbers have created a unique atmosphere at the shop specializing in any and all hair types, inspired in part by his own struggles as a teenager to find a barber.

“I set out to open a business that can service everybody whether you are black, white, or any other nationality,” said Lambert.

Lambert came to Canada when he was 9 years old after growing up in Trinidad and Tobago. When he was 14, his family moved to London. Immediately, he found a new passion cutting hair. By grade 10, he had even turned his high school boy’s locker room into his own make-shift barbershop.

“Guys from the basketball and football teams would line up to get their haircut, having designs cut into it, getting ready before games,” said Lambert.

Lambert turned his passion into a business in 2007 opening United Kutz at 147 King Street downtown with a clear vision that a barbershop should be a major part of the community.

“No matter what your financial status, age, culture or skin colour is, you are always welcome at the barbershop," said Lambert. "It’s a gathering place where people come together. It’s a place of conversation and you become psychologist when your customer gets in the chair.”

To give back to the community over the years, United Kutz has given local high school students the opportunity to work in the barbershop and learn to cut hair.

“We’ve given kids a skill that keeps them focused,” said Lambert. “Many have found a new passion and have worked full time at the shop, and some have even gone on to open their own barbershops in other cities.”

“I want my shop to be a staple in London. London made me, and we want to give kids in the community the same opportunity.”

Now with eight successful years under his belt, Lambert is investing in extensive renovations to the barbershop and a relaunch. The transformation will be unveiled with a free BBQ at United Kutz located at 147 King Street on Thursday, August 27th from 12pm-5pm.
